HOME OF THE PANTHERS

Powell students, staff and parents participated in the third annual Jog-a-Thon. Proceeds will be used for field trips and assemblies. Principal Erick Hansen thanked the PTA for sponsoring the event, which raised $1500. Each student who raised $25 or more was given a Jog-a-Thon t-shirt.
During the holidays, Powell 's Student Council collected donations for the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter.
Attendance
The staff at Powell is committed to providing
an educational program that will benefit students. To achieve
this goal, consistent attendance is essential. We ask for
your support in scheduling appointments after school. It is
necessary that each absence be cleared by a note or telephone
call from parents. A student who is absent must bring a note
from a parent explaining the specific reason for his/her absence
on the first day back at school.
In case of extended illness, assignments may be requested
through the main office with a one-day notice by a parent.
Students with perfect attendance will be recognized quarterly and yearly. Perfect attendance is defined as NO absences, NO tardies and NO early checkouts.
Dress Code
Students who do not dress in uniform must follow the district
guidelines. The following items are not permitted for school
attire:
- Clothing that indicates an affiliation with a gang or
intimidating group
- Bandannas, hairnets or beanies. Caps, hats or visors without
lettering and/or insignias are permitted outdoors when used
as protection from the sun.
- Oversized pants that fall below the waist and/or drag
on the ground.
- Baggy shorts with knee socks
- Belts with lettering or longer than waist appropriate
- Halter tops, tank tops, bare midriffs, see-through or
fish net clothing
- Clothing that does not conceal undergarments at all times
- Skirts or shorts shorter than mid-thigh
- Clothing that suggests obscene pictures, wording, and/or
drugs, alcohol, smoking, sex or violence
- Frayed or unfinished hems
- Thongs, thong-like sandals, steel-toed shoes or sandals
without a back strap
Emergency Information
Students may not be released from school during regular school
hours unless the parent/guardian or other authorized adult
picks up the child and signs him/her out in the office.
An emergency card must be on file for each student on campus.
If any information changes on the card, parents should notify
the office immediately. Each card needs to have at least two
emergency contact numbers listed. If students are temporarily
being cared for by any person other than his/her parent or
legally-appointed guardian, please advise the office.
Someone must be available to pick up your child if she/he
needs to be sent home from school for illness, injury or disciplinary
reasons. If you move or change phone numbers, please stop
by the office to update your emergency cards.
Homework
Homework serves as an important link between home and school.
It reinforces what is taught in the classroom. Homework is
assigned for three basic reasons:
- To give students opportunities to reinforce new skills
that have been acquired
- To let students expand class activities and encourage
individualized and often imaginative and creative interests
in learning
- To prepare students with the adequate background for future
class instruction
Think Together
THINK Together is an after school enrichment program open to 100 students in grades 1-5. Students are placed in groups of 20 with a program leader to receive homework assistance, curriculum enrichment, physical activity and snack time. The THINK Together program is open until 6 p.m. daily. To ensure the effectiveness of the program, students are required to attend the program for a minimum of three hours every school day.
