Philosophy
Sierra High accepts students who are significantly
behind in credits and provides them with an alternative setting
to help them be successful in school and their future.
Students either volunteer to attend Sierra High or are referred
by the Azusa Unified School District's Placement Committee
because they want a second chance to succeed and achieve a
high school diploma. Our school provides an alternative setting
for students to set new goals. The ultimate goal is to develop
a person who is willing to accept and display the responsibilities
of good citizenship and to perform satisfactorily as a contributing
member of society.

Attendance
Sierra students are required to be on time daily, and to
remain for the full day. Since most students are behind in
credits, regular attendance becomes very important in order
to make up lost credits. Illness, medical appointments and
the funeral of an immediate family member are the only reasons
for excused absence.
Credits
Sierra High is on a trimester system (3 semesters) with each trimester lasting 12 weeks. Sixty productive work hours and satisfactory completion of academic requirements per class will earn 5 credits. For graduation, 220 credits are required. The following explains our graduation requirements.

Principal
Mari Bordona says Sierra High School serves the needs of students
at risk of not graduating by offering proven and effective
alternative programs including a six-period day for continuation
high school students, a Ninth Grade Academy for academic intervention,
Independent Study and a Teen Alternative Class. We continue
to develop and refine our instructional program to reflect
the needs of our students. Our highest priority is to improve
reading, writing and mathematics skills. We are proud of our
students' improved proficiency test results and scores on
the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).
We actively encourage parent participation in the school
program. Parents' efforts are essential to the success of
the School Site Council, which supports student achievement
and school activities, and our English Language Learner Advisory
Committee which works to address the needs of our students
learning English. We look forward to parent participation
in the planning and development of a quality educational program
for students.
